Handy ways of remembering the proper word:

Easy Substitution Tests

These are easy ways to check which of two words that are similar in some way you actually need. Simply replace the word to be checked with its suggested substitution and see if the sentence still works. It might not necessarily make sense, especially when the words are opposites to the ones being tested, but if it's the right part of speech, you'll know it. If you're testing "I can hear/here him," then "I can see him" makes grammatical sense but "I can there him" does not, so you know the word should be "hear" and not "here". Hence my little chart. Find the word you want to check in the first column, substitute the word in the second column, and if your sentence still works, you have the right word.

who or whom — Make the sentence into a question and answer with "he" or "him". If the answer is "him" you want "whom"; if it is "he" you want "who". Just follow the "m".
